Thanks for the reply.  It looks like these are the functions being used and I'm seeing the sockets close each time (I wouldn't be surprised if I'm missing something still).  I guess the call to http_close is expected to cause the sockets to be closed, maybe that call doesn't need to be made?

Are you seeing this behavior with the persistent routines ?? 
(http_persist_open, http_persist_get, http_persist_post, etc)

This behavior is expected if you're not using the persistent routines... 
  because... uhhh... they're the non-persistent ones.
