Re: AS2 standard

I started looking into AS2 a while back. The reason it appealed to me
is that EDI vendors are charging large sums (from US $7000 - US $20000)
just to add an HTTP (AS2) module to their EDI software. That seems
absurd, especially since I'm the author of an existing open source HTTP
tool.

There's an open standard for AS2 maintained by the IETF (just like other
Internet standards):
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4130.txt

But there's a big problem! The open standards tell you what needs to be
done, and they say that anyone can do it -- but all of the people who
require AS2 (including 1SYNC, WalMart, etc) *require* you to be
certified with the Drummond Group. And Drummond charges more than USD
$80000 for certification, making it impractical for an open source.

Granted, according to the internet standards, the certification is not
manditory... but since all of the big players MAKE it manditory, it
doesn't matter. You get certified, or they don't do business with you.

So I gave up on making my own AS2, even at $7000, it's cheaper to buy
than build.
