Working With Amazon

I'm reeling from information overload, and I was wondering if there was
anyone out there that can help me out. Thanks in advance for any
counsel, advice, or God-willing, code snippets!
I'm trying to put together a simple RPG program to retrieve item
information from Amazon. I would love to check a set of titles to see
their availability and to see if there are any problems with Amazon
selling them. I was thinking I could have an RPG program use HTTPAPI, issue the web
request, and parse the XML for the magic terms; however, my eyes glaze
over when I read things like SHA-256 encryption.
So, before going down the path of inventing this wheel myself, I
thought I would check-in with this group to see if anyone has done
   something like this before.
Essentially, I need to use a secret key supplied by Amazon to encrypt
the entire request in the form of a signature and then use that
signature when issuing the request with Amazon. They have
instructions in their documentation, but it's a fair amount of work, so
I guess I was hoping to take the lazy way out.
Has anyone done anything with Amazon from the 400 that they would be
   willing to share?
      Thanks very much.
      Ray.
