RE: Can anybody make any sense out of this? (it involves lack of DNS)

As I'm sure you know, the IBMi has to be able to resolve host names to IP. And frankly so do the PCs within their company. It would be highly unusual to proxy DNS. Most DNS is chained.

A simple thing. Look at the DNS settings on one of their PCs. Set up the IBMi with the same DNS settings as their PC. No breach of security involved as the IBMi will be doing only the exact thing their PCs do.

C:\>ipconfig /all
...
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.22.1.1
                                            172.21.1.1
                                            172.22.1.100

We use all internal DNS servers and when names are unknown, those servers go ask gateway devices which in turn query internet servers. Here is where the IBMi DNS entries should be setup:

                        Change TCP/IP Domain (CHGTCPDMN)

 Type choices, press Enter.

 Domain name server:
   Internet address . . . . . . . '172.22.1.1'

   Internet address . . . . . . . '172.21.1.1'

Good luck.
