Thanks Scott.  You were correct, the first line of the request had a
bunch of spaces between the URL and the HTTP version.

Usually this means that you have a space in your URL.   It could also 
mean that the server doesn't support HTTP version 1.1 (but this would be

unusual, since it's what almost all browsers use today).

If you want me to give you a more concrete answer, send me a debug file.
