I have used Proxomitron in the past with good success. It is Windows
based web filter that lets you see exactly how your browser is
communicating with web servers.

Having had a brief foray into the RFC, we will go down the route of
sniffing
first :-)

We have a couple of sniffers, but neither of them will trap port 443. I
know
that the info in this port is encrypted, but I had hoped that the HTTP
headers etc may be clear.
The sniffers work OK with port 80, so I could start there & see what the
proxies do, but need ultimately to make 443 work.

Q1. Does anyone know if the HTTP headers are clear in a 443 transmission
?
Q2. Does anyone have a recommendation for a sniffer that works with port
443
?

That's part of the fun of open source, you can write the code yourself!
Currently, I don't need proxy server support in my environment. It
doesn't
make much sense for me to write proxy code that I don't need and can't
test.

There's a standard documented in RFC 2616. I don't know whether that
standard is what gets used in "the real world." It might be, but it
might
not be. It really depends on whether Microsoft decided to use it or
decided to go their own way.

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/

I'd start by using a packet sniffer to see the conversation that takes
place when you go through the proxy, and then compare that to RFC 2616.
If they're the same, great... if not, you'll have to do some googling to
see if you can find out what's really going on. That's just the
approach
that I'd take...

Exactly.
